Thyme and Change ~ Sunday Traditions

By Sheff Charles Lee

I was raised Southern Baptist through and through. Grandmother Mattie was Superintendent of our small, very hot, or very cold Sunday-go-to-meeting place…or in “sinner language,” church. Grandmother Mattie (as everyone in our small community referred to her) held this esteem position for fifty years. This “church” position proved to be a real disadvantage for everyone inside the family household because everyone was required to attend Sunday school, Church, and night services every Sunday. Unless you were in the ground, you were required to be in the church pew.

We did not have a regular minister except for the first and third Sunday of each month. The Lord’s Supper was administered on these Sundays: bread and wine, or in this case, grape juice. There were those among the congregation that felt Reverend “Money Thyme” was perhaps spiking his grape juice with Jack Daniels. The reasons were clear as he slurred his words and read from Psalms when he had instructed the congregation to St John. However, the most obvious reason was when he insisted that “Smokey Robinson and the Miracles” were a spiritual group that toured the country healing people.
Our tradition on the first and third Sunday was that Rev “Thyme” dined in our home. My grandmother decided to bake a chocolate cake in his honor. The cake batter was mixed by hand and cooked in a wood burning stove. This wood stove was our source for heat during the winter months.

She called it a Tipsy “Thyme” Chocolate Covered Pear Cake. Enjoy!

So Lovely!

… We felt very pampered and well cared for, from the moment we walked in the very welcoming front door. The gulf was exceptionally pretty, with amazing ribbons of blue and green washing up on perfectly sugar-white beaches…almost dreamlike in its beauty!

It was a wonderful experience that we hope to repeat again…very soon.

Best B&B we have ever stayed in!

My husband and I just came back from the Henderson Park hotel and this is the first time I have felt inspired enough to write a review. The front desk staff were fantastic and the Inn is the perfect place for a romantic getaway. The views of the ocean are spectacular, breakfast is delicious and there are many amenities (free snacks and drinks, happy hour, afternoon cookies, breakfast and lunch included, bicycles, beach chairs). The room was also spotless and we were greeted with wine and grapes. We can’t wait to go back to such a hospitable and beautiful retreat!

Perfection on the Beach!

…the best reason to visit in Nov. is to take advantage of the great deals at the HPI. Breakfast and lunch is included in the price, so is the view from the restaurant. We had the mini suite which is small but adequate and we had a balcony. You could lay in the bed and see the beach! The staff knew us by name and were always attentive! We love it here!

Wonderful Thanksgiving Getaway

Our stay was perfect in every way.  The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and the food was excellent. Our second floor room faced the gulf and we had a lovely view of the beach below. At night we enjoyed falling asleep to the sounds of the surf. Our bed was very comfortable, and the room was well-furnished. On arrival a tray with wine and grapes was waiting for us on the bed. Breakfast is a buffet, or the chef will cook whatever you want. We would definitely recommend this B&B, and would return again.

The location gets you there, but inn and staff will keep you there.

Location is easy to find, friendly-helpful reception and beautiful king room was ready with wine and fresh grapes.

We immediately hit the beach with chairs and umbrella ready for us. Happy hour provided fun and exceptional banana daiquiris. The chef’s special hors d’ouerves were a treat. Our dinner in the inn restaurant was superb ; Nathan was very attentive to any need we might have.

The breakfast buffet was good, omelets made to order, the lunch-box sandwich was very good and fresh. Lemonade and cookies in aft. were a treat.

We will definitely return and have already recommended to friends.

Mini Vacation at Henderson

My niece invited me to join her on a mini vacation at Henderson Park Inn on Sept. 26 – Sept. 30, 2010.

It was the most beautiful place I had ever been and the staff was so kind and friendly. Eager to assure that your vacation was perfect! The rooms were amazing, food was excellent (homemade belgian waffles with fresh strawberries and whipped cream every morning!), and the private beach topped it all off as the perfect vacation spot!

The sand is snowy white and the ocean crystal clear………makes for a getaway you will NEVER forget! I hope someday to return on a honeymoon. Can’t think of any place I would rather be!

Thank you for a vacation I will never forget!

Henderson Park Inn, Gulf-front Bed & Breakfast

(Destin, Fla.) – Henderson Park Inn is a luxurious New England-style bed & breakfast nestled in the heart of Destin, Florida. Hurricane Ivan devastated the inn in 2004, but now it’s been restored, renovated and is open for business.

Henderson Park Inn, Destin Bed & BreakfasToday, when so many condominium towers dot the Destin skyline and shoreline, it’s rare to find such a small bed & breakfast right in the middle of it all. Rooms are individually decorated and have verandas or terraces overlooking the Gulf. Some rooms include fireplaces, most have whirlpool tubs, and standup showers.

Henderson Park Inn’s innkeeper has thought of everything to make your stay as relaxing and comfortable as possible. Gilchrist & Soames lotions and bath gels from London, England along with Egyptian cotton bathrobes are provided in each room. Can’t wait to go back…

We stayed in the building that was separate from the main building (on the third floor) in one of the Executive suites. The room was immaculate and all the help at the Inn was extremely friendly and accommodating. From the made to order breakfasts in the morning to the sandwiches at lunch, to the happy hour in the afternoon, everything was top notch. All of the common space was spotless, and the landscaping looked great. The refrigerator’s with complimentary water, soda and candy bars came in very handy! We can’t wait to go back!
