The Nutcracker might be the most popular ballet in the world. With an enchanting Christmas story and iconic music, this ballet has become synonymous with the holiday season. You can experience this celebrated show from November 23 – 24, when the Northwest Florida Ballet will perform The Nutcracker at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center. Located minutes away from our Destin hotel, this excellent ballet is guaranteed to put you in the Christmas spirit.
Adapted from E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, the ballet tells the story of the Silberhaus family on Christmas Eve. Long after everyone goes to bed, the young Clara sneaks into the parlor to check on her nutcracker doll when the toy magically comes to life. The rest of the ballet is a dreamlike adventure featuring giant mice, gingerbread soldiers and fairies.
The ballet premiered in 1892 with an infectious score composed by the Russian musical genius Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The ballet contains some of the world’s most recognizable Christmas tunes, including the Russian Dance Trepak, The Nutcracker March and the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
