Destin, like many of the nation’s coastal Atlantic towns, is full of history. During your winter vacation in Destin FL, you can learn all about the fascinating story of our city.
First, you should check out the Destin History & Fishing Museum, which features award winning examples of fish caught in Destin, and a large collection of antique fishing rods and reels. Not only will you get to experience what fishing is like in Destin, you will also get an idea of what life was like before the arrival of electricity in the 1930s. There are vintage photographs of early Destin settlers, the oldest seine fishing boat still in existence, and the original Destin Post Office building is located adjacent to the museum.
When you finish checking out this beautiful museum, there are two historic sites that you will definitely want to see. The first one is Fort Walton Mound. Fort Walton Mound is a large platform mound that was built about 850 B.C. by Native Americans. This mound served as the platform for a temple and was the residence of a chief. Due to its significance, the mound was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964.
Also in Destin is the largest of four forts built to defend Pensacola Bay and its navy yard. Fort Pickens was completed in 1834 and was named in honor of Major General Andrew Pickens. Fort Pickens was one of only four forts in the South that was never occupied by Confederate forces during the Civil War. Of course, the Confederate forces did try to take this large fort multiple times, but they were never successful.
